Searching for Transactive Water Meters

Is anybody aware of smart water meter technology capable of being adapted for transactive water management?

Transactive water management uses the transactive energy techniques and open standards developed for smart grids to smooth usage spikes and align supply and demand. Transactive energy supports easy integration of diverse systems and rapidly evolving component technologies because it is the shallowest of integrations, power as a service.

While transactive energy systems are being developed at every level of the power grid (bulk power market, distribution management, campus or neighborhood microgrid, in-building microgrid), some of its most interesting applications are in the off-grid or islanded environment. Although this market is well underway, only a few smart meters are actually able to both measure and control bi-directional power flow.

Power and water provision are intrinsically linked. While some well-sharing aquifer-managing demonstrations of transactive water management are underway, its highest value may be alongside local transactive microgrids. Water pumping, water storage and even atmospheric water generation are potentially closely linked to local power markets over time. In areas of scarcity, transactive water can more precisely allocate supply over diverse participants with changing needs.

With that background, are there transaction-capable water meters yet? Do any of them offer sufficient programming capabilities to fit them into such an environment?
